Winter Waterbird Watch at Children’s Lake & Wittlinger Nature Preserve

Cumberland Valley, PA | January 18, 2025

Braving the brisk January air, a dedicated group of birders gathered for the Winter Waterbird Watch, hosted by The Bird Guy Tours. The event took us to two incredible winter birding locations—Children’s Lake and Wittlinger Nature Preserve—where open water provides a lifeline for birds during the coldest months. These spots offer a rare opportunity to observe waterfowl and other wildlife up close.

During our walk, we covered 1.43 miles and recorded an impressive 23 species. Some of the most exciting sightings included:

  • American Wigeon (11) — A treat for waterfowl lovers! These dabbling ducks with their green eye stripes are always a special find.

  • Bald Eagles (2) — A majestic pair soared overhead, offering breathtaking views.

  • Pileated Woodpecker (1) — Its loud call and striking red crest stole the show in the wooded area along the trail.

  • Great Blue Herons (3) — Gracefully hunting along the water’s edge, they were a constant presence throughout the walk.

  • Golden-crowned Kinglet (1) — This tiny but energetic bird brought smiles to those who caught a glimpse.
