LeTort Park Birding Adventure: February Delights

What an enchanting day it was for our birding escapade at LeTort Park! Welcoming both seasoned birders and newcomers, our February outing unfolded amidst a backdrop of serene overcast skies and gentle breezes, providing the perfect ambiance for our avian exploration.

Our journey commenced at the rear parking area, where a group of twelve, including myself, gathered in eager anticipation. The melodious chorus of Eastern Bluebirds greeted us right from the outset, accompanied by the vibrant calls of Northern Cardinals and the cheerful songs of American Robins. Along the LeTort Creek, the familiar sights of Canada Geese and Mallards, while no other waterfowl surprises graced our presence.

Venturing further along the trail, our senses were treated to captivating glimpses of White-throated Sparrows and a pair of Ruby-crowned Kinglets, their presence adding a delightful charm to our excursion. Despite the elusive nature of some species, the distinct calls of House Finches and White-breasted Nuthatches echoed through the air, enriching our experience.

Crossing the footbridge over the creek, we were rewarded with the sight of a Common Grackles adorned in full breeding plumage, accompanied by a mixed group of American and Fish Crows soaring overhead. As we transitioned into Goodyear Park, a flurry of activity unfolded before us, with several male Downy Woodpeckers engaging in a pursuit of a female companion. Additionally, sightings of both Hairy and Red-Bellied Woodpeckers provided an intriguing size comparison between the similar-looking species Downy and Hairy.

Our return journey culminated in a delightful encounter with a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, marking the perfect conclusion to a fulfilling day of birding in February.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who joined me on this memorable expedition.

Looking ahead, our next outing scheduled for February 17 promises further excitement as we embark on a driving search of Horned Larks, American Pipits, and perhaps even the elusive rare bunting. Until then, cherish the memories of our LeTort adventure, and may the spirit of birdwatching continue to inspire us all.
